Burgundy wines are either red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. Red and white wines are also made from other grape varieties, such as Gamay and Aligoté respectively and small amounts of rosé and sparkling wine are also produced in the region.
By their nature, young wines should be decanted in order for the notes of red fruit, black fruit, spices and all the subtle notes of terroir to excel in the glass. An older wine which is 10 to 15 years old can be drunk without any preparation other than opening it one to two hours before tasting. White wines should be served between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius (54-57 oF), no matter their age. Don’t forget, you will need a good glass, with a broad bowl, which allows the concentration of aromas.
