1996 Bordeaux Vintage

The weather is crucial in Bordeaux and a dry start to the summer fuelled the flames of expectations – but heavy rain in August dampened hopes. The rainfall in St Emilion and Pomerol was particularly heavy. The heavier clay soils, which predominate in this area, retained a lot of moisture with the resulting inevitable dilution of the grapes.
In the Medoc (Pauillac, St. Julien, Margaux and St Estephe), where gravel soils predominate, the rains had little effect and the growers, who had the courage to wait for the Cabernet to ripen fully were rewarded with fine weather in October.
Consequently they harvested grapes with wonderful complexity and a finesse rarely seen.

The best wines have rich ripe fruit with a lovely silky texture and long finish.
