Critics Comments and Scores

93-94 Flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate and coffee beans with a pine-like tinge. Medium body. Fine, round tannins. Lovely already   JS
95 Plum in colour, iris and violet aromatics, crushed rose petals, vibrant character on the opening that softens to creamy blueberry and raspberry fruits, cappuccino and gunsmoke, fennel and sage spices, this is a delicious wine that is among the standouts of the vintage in the appellation. Tight tannins on the finish, sinewy and full of character. Biodynamic. A testament to the impressive investment and vision undertaken by late owner Stephen Adams. 50% new barrels for ageing   JA
93-95 The 2023 Fonplegade is a classy, elegant Saint-Emilion. There`s a bit more mid-palate density here than in recent years, which is not a bad thing for this wine. A touch more extraction for the Merlots along with a more refined use of oak really shapes the 2023. This is one of the finest recent Fonplegades I have tasted. Bravo   AG

Chateau Notes
Château Fonplégade, nestled in the storied hills of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux, France, epitomises the fusion of historical richness with modern viticultural excellence. This prestigious estate, whose name translates to 'fountain of plenty', is renowned for its deep-rooted history and biodynamic farming practices, reflecting a profound respect for the land and its legacy. The vineyards of Château Fonplégade sprawl across the limestone and clay soils that are quintessential to Saint-Émilion, allowing primarily Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes to flourish. These conditions yield wines with a compelling depth of flavour, marked by velvety textures and vibrant, complex aromas of ripe red fruits, delicate florals, and earthy undertones. Under the stewardship of its current owners, the estate has embraced organic and biodynamic principles, enhancing the vineyard's natural balance and promoting a healthier ecosystem. This approach has revitalised the vines, which now produce higher-quality grapes, leading to powerful and refined wines. Château Fonplégade’s wines are celebrated for their elegance and sustainability. They offer a sophisticated palate experience that honours its heritage while showcasing the innovative spirit of biodynamic winemaking. Each vintage invites connoisseurs to explore a blend of tradition and innovation, capturing the essence of one of Saint-Émilion's most revered terroirs.
