Arneis is a white grape which originates from Italy's Piedmont region and was, until recently, on the verge of extinction locally. With over 1100ha now planted in Italy, the grape has even found growers utilising it in the New World (USA, Australia & New Zealand), albeit in tiny quantities. The variety produces wines exhibiting a floral bouquet with flavours of fresh pear, apricot and hazelnuts. Roero DOCG is the main production area in Piedmont, but it is also to be found in the nearby DOC of the Langhe hills. Arneis wines work well with simple pasta and salad dishes along with seafood. Foods incorporating the use of nuts (typically almond/hazelnut), stone fruits, or fragrant sage & thyme herbs are also a good match.
