Bourgogne Chardonnay, Domaine Bzikot Pere et Fils, Burgundy, France, Magnum, 2018
Grape: 100% Chardonnay, 2/3 fermented in steel, 1/3 in oak
Sylvain & Béatrice Bzikot own an impressive estate of 15 hectares in Puligny-Montrachet. Sylvain’s grandfather arrived in Burgundy from Poland just before the second world war and steadily built up the estate.
The Bourgogne Chardonnay is made from vineyards located lower down the slope, so don't qualify to be used in their Puligny wines. The vineyards for these grapes will later be named with the new appellation "Cote D'Or".
Clean and fresh on the palate, the Bourgogne shows Puligny-like characters of apples, spiced pears, white flowers and stony, mineral notes on the finish.
"Herby lemon and lime with a sprinkling of stone dust. Tight and very fresh. Not particularly intense or long but a very good palate opener and very precise. (JH)"
15.5/20 points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, December 2019
