Château Beychevelle Quatrième Cru Classé, Saint Julien, Bordeaux, 2009

Grapes: 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. Maturation in French oak barrels (50%-60% new) for 18 months. 73ha of vineyards.

A beautiful chateau located right on the Gironde Estuary with grounds sweeping down to the waterfront. The "sailing galley" label is particularly well received on the Asian market as it represents "good luck".

Always an elegant style wine with great aromatic richness offering black fruit, sweet spices, and a light tobacco note. 2009 is considered a "legendary" vintage in Bordeaux!

An early tasting review from Jancis Robinson in April 2010 said:

"Pretty dark crimson right out to the rim. Alluring graphite notes on the nose. Fresh and mild. Not dramatic but neat and pretty. Very sweet but with the tannins in check. Though it will take a little while for them to dissipate. Real juice and concentration though." 16.5/20 points 

In December 2011, Robert Parker, Wine advocate, said:

"The finest Beychevelle since the 2003 and probably since the 1982, Beychevelle’s 2009 is opaque purple in color, with a beautiful, floral nose intermixed with black currant fruit, licorice, cedar wood and Christmas fruitcake. Full-bodied yet still elegant and pure, this wine has velvety tannins, a broad, savory mouthfeel, and a very long finish. There is plenty of tannin behind the extravagant fruit, glycerin and texture of this wine, but it is largely concealed. This wine could actually turn out to be even better than my relatively conservative tasting note. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2042." 93/100 points

More recently, in March 2019, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, gave a glowing review:

"Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Beychevelle begins a little closed, slowly revealing notes of iron ore, tilled soil, fungi and underbrush over a core of blackberry preserves, warm plums and cassis with touches of mocha and camphor. Full-bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, it has a firm texture of ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with a compelling mineral lift." 93/100 points
