Chateau Faizeau Montagne St Emilion 2005 Vieilles Vignes
Terrific value for the money. Long, elegant aromas of ripe black cherries, plums and bacon. Full-bodied and supple with a lasting finish. Terrific balance and complexity. A fantastic vintage. Made from Merlot exclusively.
What are 'vieilles vignes'? Old vines. But how old is old? Well, in the case of Château Faizeau they're around 60 years of age. Some even go back to 1904... That's old. Faizeau is considered to be the best property in the appellation. 100% merlot, planted on 12ha and owned by the Lebreton family that also runs la Croix de Gay in Pomerol. Around 50% new oak is used per vintage. 12ha is not a lot of vines and with the low yields not much wine is made, yet most winos know this château. Parker loves it too. Could that be the reason?
