Grapes: 90% Merlot & 10% Cabernet Franc, organic, 7ha vineyard, 35 year old vines, matured 12-14 months in French oak barrels
Bright purple colour, enchanting aromas of blackberry jam, prunes and mint lead onto a velvety medium-bodied palate, fine balance and impressive length of flavour. Complex and elegant, it is a lovely example of the 2019 vintage, an excellent right-bank year.
This particular cuvee, the 'second' wine of Chateau La fleur de Viaud, is their first Vegan certified wine and carries a special authentication stamp on the back label.
Ownership & history: The Chevalier family have been making wine in Bordeaux for four generations. The two brothers in charge today bought seven hectares of vines in Viaud in 1996. Etoile means "star" in French, so the Château name translates as "The Star of Viaud".
Vineyard & location: The Chevalier family's estate is made up of 50 hectares: 40 in the Fronsadais, seven in Lalande-de-Pomerol and one-and-a-half in Saint Emilion Grand Cru. The soil consists of sandy gravel and silt deposits.
Food Match: An easy drinking claret ideal with poultry and veal.
