Description

Château Palmer 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux, Bordeaux, France, 2000

Grapes: A blend of 47% Merlot and 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 66ha vineyard on gravel soil, aged 18 months in French oak barrels (up to 60% new)

A magnificent wine has been made, the epitome of Margaux, with fragrant fruit and soft supple texture. Not at all massive on initial tasting, it builds in the mouth and finishes with sweet, succulent symphony of flavours.

Producer Note:

Although the sugar levels did not reach those of 1999, the richness of the phenolic compounds was extraordinary. The quality of the fruit, combined with ripe tannins and sufficient acidity produced an incredible long-lasting Margaux. The 2000 vintage shines through its classicism. It is rich and dense with a powerful and complex nose. Its taste is immediately impressive. We are talking about a powerful Château Palmer with exceptional ageing qualities.

Critics' Tasting Notes

"Deep in colour, there remains a slight broodiness on the nose, although it loses its inhibitions and develops potent blackberry, strawberry and mint aromas, perhaps just a smudge of camphor. It is unashamedly rich on the entry: intense and vibrant with layers of black cherry and cassis fruit pierced by a fine line of acidity. This millennial tightens everything up towards the, finish whereupon it reverts to something much more classic in style, long and tensile. It does not quite occupy the same class as the 2005 or the imperial 2010, but it certainly has long-term potential. My advice? Give it another 4-5 years in the cellar."

94/100 points, Neal Martin, May 2015

"This bottle was much better than the one tasted a few months ago. With the texture of pure silk, from the moment the wine left the glass, it was where it needed to be with its perfume seemingly created in a tobacco shop with flowers on every counter. Full-bodied, elegant, fresh and refined, the silky tannins and layers of sweet, ripe, soft red fruits on your palate sealed the deal. You can enjoy this for another 2 decades with ease."

96/100 points, Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider, September 2021
