Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieux Télégraphe 'La Crau' 2007

Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, liquorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, blackcurrants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouth feel, and enormous length and richness.

'The sample I tasted at the domaine was fresher than the one I tasted blind at the Federation earlier but still had a slightly lack of freshness that worried Daniel Brunier who went off to see whether it had been taken from a recently racked foudre. The fruit underneath was certainly impressive – round, explosive, massive and decidedly animal. Big, dramatic, powerful – a very pure Châteauneuf expression – and still pretty chewy and stolid. Wait and wait for this one which I expect to show better and better with time – hence the plus signs on the score.' 17/20 Jancis Robinson

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe does indeed derive its name from an old telegraph station, one which was once sited on the hill where this Châteauneuf domaine now stands.

The Vieux Télégraphe vineyards are unusual in that they lie in a single block, on the La Crau plateau, today covering an area of 70 hectares. The ground is covered by the galets roules, the large rounded stones which originated in the Alps to the east, and were transported down to lower lands by the action of floodwaters. They are classically associated with the vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape, although they can also be found in other areas across the south of France. Beneath these stones there is a more organic soil, up to 1.5 metres deep, a molasse deposited here during the Miocene era, and then deeper again there is a red clay. The vines average an impressive 50 years of age, with a significant proportion old enough to draw their pension at 65 years.

Ripe and Ready Chateauneuf

Pure Chateauneuf style from an excellent vintage for this house. Full flavoured with plumb, cherry and black currant. Silly smooth tannins and a long finish means this wine is ready to drink now.
We got this delivered and left it to rest for three weeks before opening but it could have done with resting for much longer. There was a lot of sediment and had to filter it twice when breathing. It also needs time to open up, we gave it 4-5hrs and it was perfect.
Served this on Christmas Day with roast turkey, stuffing etc and it was a great match. Strong enough to stand up to the flavour but not too much.

Note: we also served the 2011 vintage at the same time. It displayed similar characteristics to the 2007 though was a little taut by comparison. Likely it will relax with age.
