The 2021 vintage was a difficult one with frosts reducing the yields of Sauvignon Blanc by 30% at Cloudy Bay and many others across New Zealand. Ripening of the fruit was excellent with the quality of the 2021 harvest, according to John Flanagan, Cloudy Bay’s viticulturist, being remarkable for Sauvignon Blanc.
Intensely concentrated, it is a fresh, vibrant wine with grapefruit, passionfruit, makrut lime leaf on the nose and layers of lime, lemongrass and stone fruit flavours on the palate. Tangy, salty acidity keeps everything fresh and this Cloudy Bay is an example of the later harvesting that's in place now to help develop a riper fruit profile with less of the pyrozene (cat's pee) and green pepper notes of the past.
Drink with fish, particularly salmon, and seafood.
