Condrieu, Vidal-Fleury, Northern Rhone, France, 2017
Grape: 100% Viognier, steep slopes on granite soils, handpicked, fermentation 50:50 in steel and oak with 30% skin contact, ageing 12 months on lees with batonnage, unfined.
Established in 1781 in the Northern Rhone Valley, Vidal-Fleury is the oldest continuously operating in the Rhone Valley.
Pale yellow colour with flashes of gold. The wine has intense fresh apricots, floral aromas with touches of spicy almond. The palate is intense and unctuous with good balanced length and dry apricot in abundance. Most wine consumers will probably drink this wine in its youth, but the producer is of the opinion that the wine will age for up to 15 years.
"Orange zest, stone fruit, plus a lovely saline note that provides a bit of freshness to the finish. Smartly done to give a foil to the richness of the fruit." 16.5/20 points, Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, November 2018
Condrieu works as an aperitif, with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, grilled sea bass & monkfish in a lemon sauce, sauerkraut with smoked fish, or with soft, sheep cheeses such as Ossau-Iraty.
