Description
Côtes du Rhône, Domaine La Soumade, Southern France, 2021
Grapes: 80% Grenache & 20% Syrah, vine age 4 to 10 years, clay/limestone soils, agriculture “raisonée” (organic practices), hand harvested, 40 to 50 hl/ha yield, 18 months’ maturation on fine lees in stainless-steel tanks
This Rhône blend from Soumade has a nicely charcoally, schisty note of cool earth and tight black fruit. On the palate there is lovely juicy, tight, pepper-edged black fruit with a real sense of freshness and clean, long finish. Delicious and quite serious stuff.
Domaine La Soumade was founded by André Roméro in 1979. A new modern winery was built in 2002, the same year that the partnership with wine consultant, Stéphane Derenoncourt, began. The estate covers 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and an additional hectare in Gigondas.
Food Match: Serve at 16° C. with slow cooked pork & lamb, stews, charcuterie
