Discovery Ultimate Reds Selection Case, New Zealand

New Zealand makes many exciting wine styles, but, for many UK consumers, its reds are a bit of a mystery. Yes, you can get Syrah and Bordeaux style blends, but the most renowned wines are made from Burgundy’s Pinot Noir grape.

The Six-Bottle “Discovery Ultimate Red” Selection Case contains a specially selected range for fans of great Pinot Noir.

1/ Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2019
Notes of autumnal fruits such as bramble, Morello cherry and loganberry combine with spice, coffee & balsamic flavours from the oak ageing. Silky smooth tannins & juicy acidity.

2/ Greywacke Pinot Noir, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2018
An ethereal concoction of red fruit and spices: juicy cherries, strawberries and cranberries, intermingled with suggestions of star anise and sarsaparilla, dark tobacco and cloves. This is a highly perfumed, aromatic style of Pinot Noir, with exotic fruit sweetness and a delicate earthy infusion. The palate has considerable length and classic cool climate vibrancy. Rated 4.5/5 Stars by Michael Cooper

3/ Ata Rangi Pinot Noir, Martinborough, North Island, New Zealand, 2018
A medley of aromas on the nose: tree-ripened plums, mulberry, exotic five spice and liquorice. It has a gorgeous entry, opening smoothly into a full mid-palate. Flavours of rosehip entwine with a fine and savoury tannin structure. Rated 96/100 by Bob Campbell MW

4/ Felton Road “Bannockburn” Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2019
Great colour and concentration with a distinctive purple rim and hue. On the nose - dark fruited, quite intense and complex with aromas of raspberry and dark cherry, pure black currant then layers of brown spices. No mistaking the energy. The minerality message is quite strong with silty crushed rock suggestions. There’s a fine savoury core alongside the fruit with dried herb and whisper of thyme. On the palate - youthful, tense, loaded with energy and vibrato, fruit flavours reflect the nose, a nut and toasty wood layer then medium+ acidity and polished tannin textures. Rated 96/100 by CamDouglasMS.com

5/ Felton Road “Calvert” Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2019
Scents of rose, ripe cranberry and sweet red cherry, there’s also a savoury dried herb note adding further complexity and depth. On the palate - youthful, savoury, fruity and complex with a core of mineral and dried herb contrasted by ripe red fruit flavours. Tannins are fine and chalky, abundant and alongside the medium+ acidity - mouth watering and just salty. The palate is long, focused and detailed. Great use of oak with just enough to notice adding flavour, texture and depth. Rated 95/100 by CamDouglasMS.com

6/ Felton Road “Cornish Point” Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2019
Notably richer nose than the Bannockburn blend. Very sweet palate entry and then it freshens up delightfully. It's drinking beautifully already. Quite long and layered. Fruit – raspberry – dominates this wine which may not last forever but is almost irresistible already. Lovely fresh finish with a suggestion of ferns. Rated 17/20 by Jancis Robinson MW
