Grapes: A blend of 45% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Francesa, 25% Tinta Roriz/Tinta da Barca/Tinta Barroca/Sousao/Tinta Cao/Tinta Amarela
Duas Quintas Red is a wine from the Douro Superior, from Quinta de Ervamoira (Schist soils at 150m altitude) and Quinta dos Bons Ares (Granite soils at 600m), made with the traditional varieties that express the potential of this outermost region.
The grapes are harvested by hand in 150 kilo boxes, crushed and destemmed, and then fermented in granite lagares and stainless steel vats where the grapes are macerated for as long as is needed to obtain a wine with the desired body and structure. After malolactic fermentation, 20% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels, 30% in large oak vats and the remainder stored in stainless steel vats for 12 months. The wine was bottled in April 2019.
Intense dark cherry colour with ruby reflections. A mature and intense vinous nose, showcasing the scent of plums and berries; when aerated the scent is transformed into complex balsamic notes.
Concentrated in the mouth, with a compact structure, and silky, well-defined tannins. The palate is complex with hints of blackberries and liquorice.
"The 2018 Duas Quintas Tinto is mostly a 45/30 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, with the rest composed of other typical grapes. It was partly aged in well-used French oak (20%) and tonels (30%) for 12 months, the rest in stainless steel. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. For the nice price, this is nicely done, as always. It is fruit-forward, of course, with a certain nod to Beaujolais. However, it also has some structure in its youth. It shows great overall. For an inexpensive wine meant to be drunk young, this is a perfect choice that is a cut above in its style.
