Virtual Luxury Christmas Wines

A new era is dawning for everyone involved in classrooms and events. Using modern technology, we can enjoy learning about our favourite wines (and gin) from the comfort and safety of our own homes. This has the added advantage that nobody needs to be the “designated driver”.

Using Zoom video conferencing is just like being in the room with Gary, who will, as ever educate, inform and entertain you for about an hour.

All sessions will be recorded and if you can't attend at the last minute just let us know so you can go through the event at your convenience later.

Why not invite your friends to make it a truly social experience?

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year to meet up with friends and family, exchange presents and share happy memories together. It’s also a very good excuse to enjoy some lovely food and fine wine.

Join Gary online as he takes you through an “ideal Christmas Day”. Unlike the real thing on the 25th December, these six wines are sampled over 3 weeks so you won’t get a hangover!

We start on Friday 4th December with wines to consume before the main event in the afternoon.

There is nothing more decadent than a bottle of Champagne at breakfast and here we sample a Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut Champagne AC to be exact. In our house on Christmas morning Champagne and smoked salmon announces the big day has arrived.

Whilst dinner is cooking its time to open some presents and what better than to keep spirits up than a lovely glass of Sherry? On this occasion we have a bone-dry, amber coloured La Gitana, Napoleon Amontillado Sherry DO. Sensational with a few almonds to tide you over until lunch (nb supplied Sherry is a 500ml bottle).

On Friday 11th December it’s time for wines with Christmas lunch.

Being a traditionalist, the obvious choice to go with the turkey is Chardonnay, and what a Chardonnay we have for you to sample here! Jean Pascal et Fils, Puligny-Montrachet AC, 2017. Classic Cote d’Or Chardonnay from the famous Puligny-Montrachet appellation. Stone fruits predominate with great integration of oak maturation and a very long finish. Perfect with the turkey!

Although Chardonnay works brilliantly with turkey, if you want a red wine then my Christmas day wine is Claret.  Probably rather too tannic for turkey, this works very well with beef.  Again, we've pushed out the boat here to sample a Château Cantemerle Haut Médoc AC, 2009.  A Grand Cru Classé chateau wine from the excellent 2009 vintage. Still has plenty of ripe fruit and grippy tannins but has developed beautifully. Proper Claret which would be wonderful with a rib of beef!

On Friday 18th December we conclude our “Ideal Christmas Day”

Finally, at some point after lunch (in our house quite a long time after lunch), it’s time for Christmas pudding, and something sweet to go with it.  We have a real treat for you here: Bila Haut Chapoutier Banyuls AC Rimage 2017. Banyuls is located on the Mediterranean coast almost in Spain. Not widely available in the UK this “vin doux naturel” is a fortified, sweet, red wine, in some ways similar to Port but made predominantly from Grenache and lower in alcohol than its Portuguese cousin. Would go well with your Christmas pudding but even better with chocolate!

What, you’re still hungry? Ok, let’s get out the cheeseboard and for this there can only be one accompaniment, a lovely bottle of Port, and we have a  Fonseca 20 year old Tawny Port for you. This 20-year old tawny example is a far cry from basic “Ruby” port and a truly worthwhile end to our tasting. Its superb bouquet is a complex marriage of ripe, plummy, mature fruit, warm spicy overtones of cinnamon and butterscotch and subtle oak nuances.
