Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Western Australia, 2017
94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc with 18 months in French oak around 1/10 new.
A youthful brick red hue colour in bright condition, together with a deep and complex nose combining rich red currant, bright mulberry and cassis fruit notes, with a floral, violet lift, sitting over cedar and tar, complex with great power.
On the palate this wine is a classic Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon with concentration and great length. The fruit flavours are a combination of mulberry, cassis and dark plum, with background notes of dark chocolate and tar. The structure is firm, with bright acidity and long, firm tannins together with leather and tarry notes.
"Elite Cabernet already showing complexity with blackcurrant, tar, tannins , leather all adding to a satisfying finish. The Ribbon Vale vineyard produces one of the three Moss Wood Cabernets. Ribbon Vale tends to produce a slightly sterner expression than Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon and is generally more suited to cellaring for a few years. Though the 2017 also offers pleasure in the here and now. Moss Wood have just marked 50 years since establishment without making a big fuss. The highly capable Keith and Clare Mugford let the wine do the talking. Strong words softly spoken…" Fergal Gleeson Great Wine Blog
