Nero di Troia (Uva di Troia)

Nero di Troia, also known as Uva di Troia,  is a thick-skinned red grape from the south of Italy, mostly found in Puglia.  The wines produced from this variety have good structure and tannins with a savoury character. Typical flavours include raspberry, cherry, dark forest fruits and plums through to liquorice and spice. Both red and rosé wines are made; some are single varietal wines, but some are blends (mostly using either Bombino Nero, Montepulciano or Sangiovese varieties). Local Puglian food pairings include Penne pasta with a venison or rabbit ragu, Orecchiette pasta with sausage and broccoli, grilled chicken with thyme, or, for vegetarians, try some fava beans with chicory.
