Description
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Poulettes Rouge, Gavignet-Bethanie, Cote de Nuits, Burgundy, France, 2014
Grape: 100% Pinot No, 9ha estate, 60 year old vines, hand harvested, 47hl/ha yield, aged one year in French oak barrels
Bright wild raspberry, cherry, and strawberry fruit fill the palate, lit with limestone shimmer, framed by firm, long tannins. Notes of liquorice, coffee, and fresh leather from the barrel ageing.
Domaine Gavignet-Béthanie et Filles was formed in the 1970s when third-generation winemaker Christian Gavignet (whose father Gaby was the winemaker at the Hospices des Nuits) married Michèle Béthanie, who had a family vine-holdings herself. Their daughters, Christine and Claire, have successfully run this sustainably farmed 9-hectare family enterprise since their first vintage in 2001. It comes off 60-year-old vines on a terraced, brown soiled, limestone studded vineyard near a cliff of white oolite and opposite some former quarries.
Food Match: Drink this wine at its best when it reaches 5-15 years' of age, with duck, goose, and game birds.
