Petit Verdot

The late ripening, black-skinned Petit Verdot variety is probably best known as a minor blending grape in Bordeaux (mainly in the Medoc), but, made as a  single-varietal wine, it is also found in the USA (California, Washington, Virginia), Argentina, Chile, Australia and South Africa in the New World. In Europe, outside of France, it is mostly grown in Spain (Duero) and Italy (Tuscany). The grape tends to produce wines which are deep in colour, concentrated, tannic and capable of being aged. Flavours found in Petit Verdot wines include black cherry and plum fruit along with floral notes (violets and lilac) and a herbal, sage character. Best paired with roasted meats and vegetarian dishes including spicy, Spanish bean stews.
