Prado Rey Roble Origen, Ribera del Duero, Spain, 2021

GRAPES: Selected from 4 of the 10 estates owned by the winery: Los Robles, El Pino, Prado del Rey and Valdelayegua – Start of the harvest: mid-September 2021 – 99% Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature between 25º and 28º with a maceration period of 10 days – Micro-oxygenation after alcoholic fermentation – Spontaneous malolactic fermentation with native bacteria.

Aged in European and American oak barrels for at least 3 months – 10% of the wine matures in centuries-old clay jars.

NOSE: Fresh notes of red and black fruits, such as blackberries and cherries, and balsamic notes of vanilla.

MOUTH: Balanced, with soft and pleasant tannins. Round and full wine. Interesting assemblage of spicy touches with berries in the aftertaste.

HISTORY: Twenty years ago we revolutionized the way of making wines in the Ribera del Duero with the launch of a new category within aged reds: the "Oak" category. Now we present Pradorey Origen, a pioneering and ground breaking wine from its birth that breaks into the market renewed and stronger than ever with an innovative ageing in century-old clay jars that maintains our current spirit of fusion between the old and the modern. Prado Rey Origen is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which has gone through different phases in these two decades: in its first vintage, that of 1997, it was characterised as a wood-based wine due to its long ageing in oak barrels, somewhat easier to drink than the traditional crianzas from the area, but with a certain complexity. It continued like this until the 2015 vintage, when we focused on the terroir and reduced barrel ageing to three months, giving way to elegance and the primacy of fruit over wood. And finally, Origen, from the 2018 vintage onwards, where we have subtracted another month in oak barrels to rest in a clay jar and thus achieve an earthy and mineral touch that conveys friendliness and complexity instead of power and rusticity. The result is a tasty, restrained and very drinkable red that is appreciated for its liveliness, its balance and its consistency.
FOOD MATCH: Sautéed or grilled mushrooms – Pizzas, sausages and meat pies – Soft cheeses.
