A new era is dawning for everyone involved in classrooms and events. Using modern technology, we can enjoy learning about our favourite wines (and gin) from the comfort and safety of our own homes. This has the added advantage that nobody needs to be the “designated driver”.

Using Zoom video conferencing is just like being in the room with Gary, who will, as ever educate, inform and entertain you for about an hour.

All sessions will be recorded and if you can't attend at the last minute just let us know so you can go through the event at your convenience later.

Why not invite your friends to make it a truly social experience?

Spain has the greatest area under vine in the world and yet many of its wines remain well-kept secrets. However, one area is rightly world famous and in this course we look at Rioja in great detail.

However, there is much more to Spain than Rioja and if you’ve not tried a delightful Verdejo from Rueda or the full-bodied Ribera del Duero then we have a real treat for you. Not forgetting those staples of southern France, Grenache and Mourvedre, here in Spain known as Garnacha and Monastrell. We have two excellent examples that will show what modern Spanish winemaking can achieve.

We are dedicating 4 weeks to Spanish wines, allowing us some time to explore this fascinating country’s wines.

Friday 19th March

Our Spanish exploration starts in Rueda DO with the delightful Verdejo grape variety. An elegant white wine, very fruity and of great freshness.

Then onto Ribera Del Duero DO where the Tempranillo grape produces more full-bodied wines than in Rioja. A powerful, clean bouquet of cherries, ripe blackberry and blueberry with hints of brioche, mocha, toasted almonds and hazelnuts. On the palate, silky smooth and mouth-wateringly juicy with soft tannins leaving a fresh aftertaste.

  • Prios Maximus Roble Bodegas de los Rios Prieto Ribera Del Duero DO 2018

Friday 26th March

Our first visit to Rioja and we start at the relatively light and white end of the scale with an oft-overlooked white Rioja made from Viura and aged in oak for 2 months. Lovely fresh and crisp lemon and lime fruit flavours are abundant in this classic white Rioja.

Next, we meet the Tempranillo grape again, this time on its home ground of Rioja. 100% Tempranillo, aged for 13 months in a variety of oak barrels. Intense dark cherry red colour. Complex, powerful berry fruit nose with hints of vanilla, cocoa and spice. Velvety softness with great depth of ripe, rich blackberry/spicy fruit on the palate, soft tannins, outstanding nobility, good structure, with a harmonic, balanced development climaxing in an elegant, full and very persistent aftertaste.

  • Lopez de Haro Rioja DOCa Blanco 2019
  • Tobelos Crianza Rioja DOCa 2016

Friday 2nd April

We now have an interlude from Rioja as we pay tribute to what Spain can achieve with two stalwarts of Southern France – Garnacha (Grenache) and Monastrell (Mourvèdre).

First up is Garnacha from Calatayud in Zaragoza, aged in oak for 10 months; soft and ripe. A cherry red colour. With fruits of the forest and red fruits on the nose. Intense, with a concentration of fruit and toasted tones that leave a persistent and balanced finish. From vines 60 to 80 years old.

Then onto Alicante DO for a 100% Monastrell, here in the Levant the grapes reach full ripeness and produce heady, full-bodied wines. Displaying an opaque purple colour with abundant blueberry and black raspberry fruit aromas intermixed with a hint of crushed chalk. Medium to full-bodied with amazing concentration, this big, savoury, mouth-filling red should drink nicely for 5-6 years.

  • Tarima Organic Monastrell Tinto Alicante DO 2019

Friday 9th April

For our last week we return to Rioja for two amazing wines. Firstly, we have an “Selección Especial” from Muga, one of the most reliable of Rioja Boedgas and a personal favourite. Here they go beyond what is required under Reserva rules with this stunning wine from the outstanding 2015 vintage. This wine has a black-cherry colour with a high robe and good density. On the nose it brings back reminders of ripe red-berry fruit, spices (pepper) and woodland herbs; the full spectrum of coffee aromas also makes a strong appearance: coffee toffees, roasted coffee, etc. with very well-integrated oaky aromas. In the mouth it is silky-smooth, with a presence of tannin revealing its youth and good cellaring potential. The tannin backbone gives it elegance and fine balance.

Finally, we sample a Gran Reserva Rioja, aged for at least 5 years of which at least 2 have been in oak, before release and only made in very good – outstanding vintages. Ours is from 2005, another outstanding vintage in Rioja. Fleshy and tasty in the mouth, red and black stone fruits, with a slightly bitter tannin which indicates freshness. Spicy dark chocolate ending with a lengthy aftertaste.

  • Muga Seleccion Especial Reserva Rioja DOCa 2015
  • Bagordi Gran Reserva Rioja DOCa 2005
