Zweigelt (also known as Blauer Zweigelt) is the most widely grown red grape variety in Austria. A crossing of Blaufrankisch and St Laurent varieties, it's grown throughout all of the country's wine regions, with styles ranging from exuberantly fruity reds (think Beaujolais) and dry rosés to highly extracted, oak-influenced versions, particularly those from Burgenland & Neusiedlersee. Sweet examples are also made using dried grapes (Straw wine) and frozen grapes (Ice wine). Also planted in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Canada, USA, and even in Japan, Zweigelt produces wines which are richly colored with a deep, bright core of spiced cherry and raspberry flavuors. The more concentrated wines will also have notes of liquorice, black pepper and chocolate. The grape can often be found blended with Cabernet/Merlot making wines similar to those of Bordeaux. The wines make a great pairing with picnic meats such as ham hock, mustard coated grilled sausages to a rich duck confit.
