Description

1995 Claret Premier Cru Case, Bordeaux, France (6 x 75cl)

A mixed case of some of the greatest Bordeaux "First Growth" wines containing 1 bottle each of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1er Grand Cru Classé Pauillac, Bordeaux, France, 1995

Grapes: A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

"Blackish ruby with hardly any suggestion of ageing. That very refined lift of Lafite on the nose – oyster shells? Very elegant indeed – no dry tannins. Complete and with enough juice. A very fine Lafite. Lovely graphite finish – sinewy. No heaviness at all. And the tannins are SO well managed!"

19/20 points, Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, March 2011

Chateau Latour, 1er Grand Cru Classé Pauillac, Bordeaux, France, 1995

Grapes: A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

"It has been close to a decade since I last this wine. The time in the cellar has added a lot here. Still youthful, some secondary characteristics have started appearing. Now you find cigar wrapper, creme de cassis, oyster shell, smoke, forest floor, cranberry, and red plums. Full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and with a gentle austerity, there is a firmness in the finish that works perfectly with all the layers of ripe, crisp, red berries. 2 hours in the decanter works well here. Drink from 2025-2065."

96/100 points, Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider, July 2022

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1er Grand Cru Classé Pauillac, Bordeaux, France, 1995

Grapes: A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 19% Merlot.

"Even darker than the 1996, this Mouton is still remarkably youthful in appearance. More flamboyant on the nose, with cigar-box, spices and leafy blackcurrant notes all evident. There is plenty of concentration and weight for further ageing, although the tannins are a little dry – perhaps a reflection of the harvest conditions. Still a very impressive Mouton."

18/20 points, Andy Howard MW, JancisRobinson.com, October 2021

Chateau Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classé Margaux, Bordeaux, France, 1995

Grapes: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot & Cabernet Franc.

"Medium garnet colour going brick at the rim. The nose is beginning to showing signs of evolution with aromas of leather, game, warm cassis, dried plums and cloves. Medium to high acidity, medium body and medium to firm, fine tannins support earthy, blackcurrant-preserve fruit. Long finish. Drink now – 2030+."

95/100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Journal, May 2009

Chateau Haut-Brion, 1er Grand Cru Classé Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France, 1995

Grapes: A blend of 48% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon & 9% Cabernet Franc.

"The more I taste this wine, the more I like it. This is one of the few 95s that do not typify the austerity of the vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated and aromatic, with a nose of smoke, cigar wrapper, burning forest leaves, and currants, the is loaded with fresh currants, herbs, cedar, and tobacco on the palate. You find good length and energy making you want to enjoy another sniff and sip. Drink from 2022-2050"

96/100 points, Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider, November 2022

Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion, Bordeaux, France, 1995

Grapes: A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot.

"Tasted at Cheval Blanc dinner at The Ledbury. This is an outrageously decadent Cheval Blanc. The nose is layer upon layer of ebullient, red-berried fruit: raspberries, crushed strawberries, lavish creamy new oak and a touch of vanilla pod. I would describe it as “slutty” in the hands of a lesser estate. The palate is full-bodied with plush red-berried fruit, at the moment firmly under the governance of the Merlot with a sexy, lascivious finish. The word that comes to mind is: orgiastic. I wonder if it will obtain the breeding of the ’85?"

95/100 points, Neal Martin, September 2011
