About Don Melchor
The grapes for Don Melchor are harvested from 114 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Puente Alto. The vines, 20 years-old on average, yield very low amounts of tiny, compact bunches which are highly concentrated in colour and fruit flavours. It is Puente Alto’s position that makes it so special. Located in the Upper Maipo Valley, set in the foothills of the Andes and near the Maipo River, there is a significant variation between day and night time temperatures in the vineyard. Long, sunny but cool days and cold nights allow the vines a more leisurely ripening process. This, in turn, acts to preserve the elegant aromas and flavours of the grapes. The soil in the Puente Alto vineyard is very stony, making it highly permeable and free-draining.
The climatic conditions coupled with intense vineyard segmentation has allowed the wine maker Enrique Tirado to follow maturation levels closely and wait patiently for the tannins to fully ripen while conserving the fresh fruit expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto.
