Chablis Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Roy, Burgundy, France, Magnum, 2017
Grape: 100% Chardonnay from around 9ha of vineyards planted in the 1970s. Yield is 60ha/hl. Machine harvested. Fermented in stainless steel tanks.
The Roy family have been vignerons in the village of Fontenay, just to the north of Chablis, for over 200 years. Today Claude Roy, together with his daughter Karine and nephew David, farm 20 hectares of vines on the right bank of the River Serein. They are one of the largest owners of the grands crus including a magnificent 3.5 hectare plot in Bougros. They have only recently begun to bottle a significant proportion of their harvest, having previously sold a majority in bulk to the negociants.
The Vieilles Vignes (Old Vines) Chablis has a mineral nose with orchard fruits and citrus zest. A stony, but gently textured palate with more apple, pear, lemon zest and some additional tropical notes.
Perfect as an aperitif to go with gougères, a cold andouillette, and comté cheese. It also works with snails, asparagus, sauerkraut, terrines, Italian pasta dishes such as carbonara, bolognese, pestos, and sea food…. All types of Asian food also stand up well.
