Grapes: A blend of 44% Merlot, 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, 55ha vineyard on gravel soil, aged in French oak barrels
Palmer is renowned for its fleshy texture derived from the unusually high proportion of old vine Merlot in the blend. Many of these vines were planted in the 1930s.
Chateau Tasting Note:
The Merlots are fruity, rich and generous. The Cabernet Sauvignons show great finesse and are characterised by very high purity of tannins. Full of juice, the grape varieties were each able to express the typicality of their terroir, through a tailor-made blend of freshness and fruit. A rich and distinguished vintage resulting in a magnificent expression of the Château Palmer style.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"Deep coloured. Classic nose with some blackcurrant fruit, a bit of earthiness, and subtle minerality. Still quite primary. The palate is supple and fruity with a nice, spicy tannic structure under the smooth black fruits. Finishes fairly savoury and tannic. Good acid and freshness. More time is called for here, because this is slightly austere at the moment."

"Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. A deep garnet core, this has an introverted nose at first but it opens up in the glass to reveal cedar and cigar box aromas with just a hint of black olive interlacing the ripe black fruits. The fineness of the tannins is undeniable the fruit moving into secondary stage with hints of dried herbs and tobacco. Very good structure although it does not quite have the gravitas on the finish. It is more masculine and almost Saint-Julien like in its personality. Fine."
