Port. The perfect finish to the seasonal feast.

Port. The perfect finish to the seasonal feast.

Published by William Frazier on 11th Dec 2015

One of the many wonderful traditions of the Christmas celebration is the requisite appearance of the dusty old bottle or ¾ full decanter of Port. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the block of Stilton that magically appears on the dining room table during the last week of December.
Vintage ports, crusted ports and some late bottled vintage ports, form a sediment in the bottle and require decanting. This process also allows the port to breathe, releasing the complex aromas and flavours that are hidden by years of storage.
Christmas is a great time for Port and when served with cheese provides a fitting end to your celebratory feast.

Russet in colour with brilliant crimson highlights and a fragrant, ripe-fruit bouquet. Its smooth, silky texture and subtle oak nuances are balanced by a fresh acidity and tannic "grip" that culminate in a long, elegant, plummy finish.

Taylor’s 20 Year Old Tawny £32.99
Taylor’s blends its magnificent 20 year old tawny Ports from its extensive reserves of old cask aged Ports matured in the firm’s cool and tranquil cellars (known as ‘lodges’) in Oporto on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. In the 20 Year Old tawny, the fruit has mellowed further than in the 10 Year Old, and the spicy, nutty aromas of ageing are more powerful and intense.

Nose of incredible power and density, unashamedly dominated by an all-pervading aroma of fine oak wood. Here, the typical aromas of cask ageing abound: spicy smells of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and liquorice, warm roasted coffee smells, and an intense nuttiness reminiscent of walnut and hazel. An incredible, lengthy finish leaving a mouthful of lasting, mellow, spicy flavours and a persistent impression of fine seasoned oak. Simply sensational.

Taylor’s Vintage Port 1970 £195.00
A deep garnet core with a faded brick rim. The nose is still tight, youthful with notes of liquorice, raisin, boot-polish and a little lemongrass. Very well defined. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, very cohesive with superb ripeness: wild strawberry, lemongrass, smoke and dates with an incredibly long, persistent finish. There is an effortless nature to this wine.
