Watervale Riesling Mitchell 2020

Watervale Riesling Mitchell, Clare Valley, South Australia, 2020   

Grape: 100% Riesling, dry grown and hand picked from 50 year old vines.

This dry wine has a powerful, concentrated aromatic intensity showing lemon, lime and spring flowers on the nose. The palate has immense generosity of fruit flavour and incredible mineral complexity and length. We have no doubt that the quality of the vintage will reward cellaring this wine for more than a decade. 

Winemakers notes "A traditional, low intervention style that we have used for the last 40 years. Our old dry-grown vines grew a wonderfully balanced crop with small berries but great flavour development. The grapes are hand harvested and treated very carefully in the winery with only the highest quality free-run juice used. The wine experiences a long gentle fermentation with our indigenous vineyard yeasts and is aged on lees until bottling in the first week of September." 

"I used to cellar a lot of Mitchell Riesling, drink a lot, indeed, a go to in my early days learning the wine thing. Ever reliable, usually very high quality, I don’t see it about as often these days though I may be swinging in the wrong circles. Line and length style, usually, but high quality fruit and good polish in winemaking. Very aromatic, all citrus blossom and lime juice in scents, a little tickle of wet slate or similar, but mostly about the florals and fruitiness. Welcomingly bitey and fresh to taste, a crispness, a light juiciness, a good steely, chalky finish way down the trail too. Lime juice, green apple juice, a little musk stick.
