Description
Dom Perignon Vintage Champagne, France, 2013
"Dom Perignon" is Moet's deluxe cuvée produced from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from only the best vineyards. It's named after the Benedictine monk who was cellarmaster at the Abbey of Saint Pierre d'Hautvillers in the 17th century.
The Season:
The 2013 vintage began with a cool, rainy spring (after a cold winter) followed by the sunniest summer on record in the Champagne region. The growing cycle was delayed by about two weeks from normal and the harvest only began at the end of September with 90% of the grapes being picked in October. Easterly winds dried out the vineyards after early September rainfall and the grapes were harvested in good condition with excellent balance of fruit and acidity. In general, Chardonnay sites ripened better than those growing Pinot Noir.
Producer Tasting Note:
The delicate nose unfolds in swaths of colour. The green of eucalyptus, mint and vetiver (a citrusy, earthy grass), the yellow-orange of mirabelle plums, apricot and orange blossom, the brown of pepper, cardamom and liquorice sticks, and finally silvery saline and toasty hues. The mouthfeel is elegant, expressing luxuriant simplicity and precision. The refined and silky foundation becomes more pronounced at the heart. The finish is dominated by a salinity that leaves a deep sensation of consistency.
Critics' Tasting Notes:
"Intense, lightly spicy nose and then on the palate very smooth-textured, gentle and lifted, with light bitterness on the finish – grapefruit peel? Some lightly vegetal notes and very long. Seamless texture and already very agreeable." Drink 2022-2032
18.5/20 points, Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, November 2022
"Disgorged in October 2022, the 2013 Dom Pérignon is a charming and elegant vintage for this cuvée. It reveals complex aromas of buttery pastry, spices, citrus oil, almonds, honey and, with aeration, a touch of smoke. The palate is medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, with a chiseled and tightly wound profile. The long, cool growing season has brought freshness and a delicate earthy note to the finish." Drink 2023-2043

Food Pairing:
Drink with shellfish, crab & lobster, or pair with acid-rich fruits or plants such as citrus fruits, green tomatoes, sorrel or rhubarb.
