Description

Chateau Angludet Margaux 2023 6 x 75cl En Primeur

Grapes: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot, Biodynamic, 1/3 aged in clay amphorae & 2/3 in French oak barriques (35% new) for 12 months

A blueberry and violet bouquet with hints of tobacco and cassis. Silky textured, medium-bodied palate with flavours of freshly picked blueberries and thyme. A Margaux rich in finesse, incredibly well structured. The dark fruit tastes elegant and fresh, the mouthfeel is juicy, with fine-grained tannins and very nice depth. Will mature well.

Critics Comments and Scores (Tasted April, 2024)

91/100     JMQ
93-94/100 A polished and in-check red with blackberry, dark-chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It has a medium body, creamy and round tannins and a savory finish. Well done for this estate.   James Suckling
93/100 One of the lowest yields (20 hl/ha) in Margaux due to a change in pruning methods by Ben Sichel and one of the most profound wines of the appellation as a result. Has a richness and concentration that bears comparison with the magnificent 2022. Lovely pure blackcurrant aromas, firm but ripe tannins and fresh acidity make this a fine, harmonious wine that will age splendidly. The whole 32 hectare estate is now certified as biodynamic and the wine continues to be aged one third in 700 litre clay amphorae and two thirds in traditional 225 litre barriques bordelaises principally supplied by the tonnellerie Saint Martin from oak sourced from the forest of Jupille in north west France. 2030-2036 CT
18+/20 While many properties benefitted from generous yields in 2023, Angludet was, again, stuck at around 20 hl/ha, which is tight, to say the least. This is because they have adopted a new pruning regime that, on the one hand, restricts crops in the short term but endeavours to avoid mildew problems, which was a scourge in the 2023 vintage. They expect yields to increase over the coming years. Darker in colour than expected, this beautifully perfumed wine is quiet on the front half of the palate and then expands, gathering intensity and bravado, and the finish is glorious. With tension, drama, and sappy fruit notes, this is a superb wine with refined, emery board tannins on the finish. Returning to the glass a second and third time, the fruit seems even more expressive. 2023 is a fabulous vintage for Angludet and I have not seen this balance of dark fruit and riveting freshness before at this estate. While it ought to drink well from 2030, it is likely to have the energy to last for a further 15 years with ease. Interestingly, this is undoubtedly the finest of the ‘inexpensive Margaux’, so act fast if you are a fan. Chapeau.   Matthew Jukes

Chateau Notes
Château Angludet belongs to the Sichel family, Bordeaux wine merchants for six generations. It is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. Records going back to the year 1150 mention a “noble residence” in Angludet, a name which means “Angle of High Land”. The first lord of the manor, referred to in a deed dated 1273, was the knight Bertrand d’Angludet. The vineyard has had practically the same configuration since 1758 – thus for over 250 years – which is exceedingly rare. Diana and Peter Sichel fell in love with Angludet and acquired it in 1961. They undertook a significant renovation and Peter Sichel made constant improvements during the 40 years he was in charge. It is now one of the finest wines in Margaux. After Peter Sichel died in 1998, his wife, Diana, and their six children have continued his efforts to make the best possible wine. Since 1989, Benjamin Sichel has managed the estate and overseen all aspects of viticulture and winemaking. He is also attentive to using natural, sustainable practices in the vineyard.
