Description

Moss Wood Wilyabrup Chardonnay, Margaret River, Western Australia, 2021

Grape: 100% Chardonnay, hand picked and whole bunch pressed with 17 months in French oak (50% new). Full malolactic fermentation.

Producer Tasting Notes:

The Moss Wood style is to produce a complex wine, rich, with veils of fruit flavours. Chardonnay with a superb ageing capacity. Fastidious viticulture, fermentation & lees ageing in French barriques.

Colour: Medium straw hue with green tints. Bright condition.

Nose: An absolutely typical Moss Wood Chardonnay showing all the vineyard’s classical features but with the added intensity from the mild season. There are bright fruit aromas of melon, peach and lime, with a complex background of roast cashews and almonds, crème caramel and honey. The final note is a soft, lightly toasty oak.

Palate: The influence of the cool season also shows up nicely on the palate, where the wine displays full body but crisp acidity. This amplifies the bright peach and melon flavours, followed by caramel and a touch of oak. There is some tannin on the finish but they are nicely balanced by the fruit generosity.

Cellaring: Given the very high quality of the year, we strongly recommend the 2021 for cellaring and suggest a minimum of 10 years for some bottle development but it can be aged well beyond 20 years to reach full maturity. However, there is one proviso, it is very enjoyable now and will tempt even the most dedicated cellaring person.

Critics' Tasting Notes:

"You’re rarely left wondering what you’re drinking when you have a Moss Wood Chardonnay. Peach and lime, honeysuckle, ginger snap oak, and Jersey Caramel. Plenty of flavour, all peach tea and lime, with a spicy cashew creaminess, ripe and fruity, kind of glossy, but tight in citrus acidity. Offers some grip and toasty oak input."

95/100 points by Gary Walsh, THE WINE FRONT, September 2022

"In October 2021, I stopped in for half a day at Moss Wood and tasted through the Chardonnays (estate and Ribbon Vale) and Cabernets (estate and Ribbon Vale) from barrel, to help me better understand the spectrum of coopers and their impact on the finished wines. So, having looked at this wine two years ago, broken down into four different components, I can see how this finished product came to be this way. There was plenty of rain about in 2021, and the later-picked Moss Wood Chardonnay fruit benefited from some extra hang time after the first deluge in early to mid-February. The 2021 Chardonnay is concentrated and nutty and littered with roasted pineapple, citrus flesh, creamed cashew, red apples and clotted cream. Loads of acid mingling with the fruit. This is a deep, rich wine, consistent with the Moss Wood Chardonnay style."

94/100 points, Erin Larkin, WINE ADVOCATE, July 2023

Drink with creamy mushroom and roasted vegetable dishes such as pizza, ravioli and quiche.
